Dear Henry von Kroge,
the von Kroge´s are resident in Kleinwörden at least since 1543, when Peter
van Kroge and Dirik van Kroge are mentioned in the local tax-registers.
Further references in tax-lists of Kleinwörden are as follows: Hinrich vom
Kroge 1562, Tidtke vom Kroge 1577, Tidtke vom Kroge 1578, Tidtke vom Kroge
1588, Hinrich vom Kroge who had been dispossessed by the Marschalck´s, a
noble family in Hechthausen ,1588, Claus vom Kroge, Hinrich vom Kroge and
Diedrich vom Kroge 1604, Tidtke vom Kroge, Jacob vom Kroge and Hinrich vom
Kroge 1640, Frantz von Croege, Dierich von Kroege, Jacob von Kroge and
Hinrich vom Kroege 1647.
With a certain degree of probability these persons were illegitimate
descendants of the medevial noble family "von dem Croge". Hans G. Trüper, a
historian who lives in Bremen, has just recently published his extensive
dissertation entitled "Ritter und Knappen zwischen Elbe und Weser" (knights
and squires between E. and W.) In this opus he describes Krögerdorf,
situated 5 km south west of Bremen-Vegesack as place of origin of the von
Kroge´s. According to him the arms of this noble family were as follows: an
escutcheon divided into 2 parts, the upper one showing a gryphon, the lower
showing two silver stripes.
With kind regards from Hechthausen
