Dossi's "Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue" in Wawel Castle.
Dossa Dossi's (1475-1542) world famous painting "Jupiter, Mercury and Chastity", one of the painter's best pictures will soon be displayed in the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow. It is another gift for the museum offered by Prof. Karolina Lanckoronska and the Lanckoronski Foundation. Dossi painted the picture in 1523-24 to the order of duke Alfonso d'Este of Ferrara. The Lanckoronskis bought the painting in 1888 and placed it in their Vienna palace. During World War II the Germans requisitioned the painting. Regained by the Americans it was transferred to Viennese Kunsthistorisches Museum. The Lanckoronskis for years tried to regain this and other paintings from Vienna. At the end of 1999 the Austrian government recognised the family's rights and decided to offer Wawel not only Dossi's painting but also several other artefacts: early Medieval Byzantine gemma and four valuable ancient Greek
