    Jan de Fries, baptized on August 25. 1647, was the son of a Dutch sea captain, Johan de Fries, and a black woman named Swartinne. After his fathers death, de Fries inherited his property, held in trust for him by Paul D'Angola and Clara Cride, two former slaves of the captain. Despite the loss of some of his property to his fathers creditors, Jan de Fries became a landowner on the outskirts of New York City. He was a mamber of the Duich Reformed Church, in which he was married to Ariante Dircks of Albany and in which they baptized their four children between 1682 an 1689.
