I found some informations about Italian Surnames:

Joseph Guerin Fucilla: Our Italian Surnames

Domenico, Dominico, Domico - Menchi, Minchi, ??..

Dominus is the Latin word for Lord. Dominus was the title of a clergyman, in particular a settled (i.e., resident) minister or parson.
Also used in the Menghino family: domino Menghino Mezano (Mezzani) 1295-1375/76

    Another copy from internet:
The distinguished surname Meng can be traced back to the ancient and beautiful region of Venice. Although people were originally known only by a single name, it became necessary for people to adopt a second name to identypy themselves as populations grew and travel became more frequent. The most comman type of family name in the region of Venice is the patronymic surname, which is derived from the father's given name. The surname Meng came from a medieval given name which originally derived from the Latin name Dominicus, which means Lord.

Text and a picture of St. Martina (Menghino). Church of S. Martina Rome, page 622.

    St. Martina
Roman virgin, martyred in 226, according to some authorities, more probably in 228, under the pontificate of Pope Urban I , according to others. The daughter of an ex-consul and left an orphan at an early age, she so openly testified to her Christian faith that she could not escape the persecutions under Alexander Severus. Arrested and commanded to return to idolatry, she courageously refused, whereupon she was subjected to various tortures and was finally beheaded. The accounts of her martyrdom which we possess belong to a late period and as usual contain many amplifications which have not, as Baronius has already observed, any historical value. The relics of St. Martina were discovered on 25 Oct., 1634, in a crypt of an ancient church situated near Mamertine prison and dedicated to the saint. Urban VIII , who occupied the Holy See at that time, had the church repaired and, it would seem, composed the hymns which are sung at the office of the noble martyr, 30 January.

This is a proof that Menghino is an old family and I enjoy very much to search for them, but I have to go back to my ancestors in Germany, there too I have many missing links.

Menghino Mezzani. He was descended from an ancient family of Mezzano near Ferrara, and was also a notary at Ravenna when Dante arrived there in 1317. Deeds bearing his signature, rela- ting both to the public affairs of the city and the private matters of the citizens, date from that year, and are preserved among the archives. He was, moreover, associated with other learned jurists in revising the statutes of Ravenna. But as a pupil of Dante in poetry, as Menghino Mezzani the rhymester, he is more interesting to us.
