Mattäus Kochhafe, born in 1495 in Brackenheim in the duchy of Würtemberg, was a student in Tübingen and Schwäbisch Hall before becoming the first Protestant pastor in Ingelfingen (in south central Germany) in 1525 (8 years after Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg, and when the Edict of Worms, condemning his teachings, was still in effect.) During the confusion of the early Reformation time, he steadfastly refused orders of local officials to reinstate the mass, and preached openly against it. During one such sermon in February 1530, an official, angered by his audacity, stormed the pulpit with drawn sword, frightening Kochafe's pregnant wife so much that she gave birth prematurely to their first son, David. That same year Catholicism was reintroduced there. and the young family was forced to flee. Kochhafe then became the first Protestant pastor in Mentzingen (in the Kraichgau, not far from Heidelberg) and remained there for the rest of his life ......
