Jacob van der Wege (Weghe), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at the Vrijdagsmarkt of Ghent , Belgium on 28 July 1573. Jacob was born at Ronse (Renaix) in Flanders. After having been hunted for a long time by the inquisitors in the south part of Flanders, he went to Ghent, where he joined the congregation and lived quietly for three years. Then he was arrested and put to death with three other martyrs. During this execution, which took place at eleven o'clock in the morning, the crowd of bystanders, sympathizing with the martyrs, interfered with the executioner and the priest-confessor, and the execution could not be carried out until the police arrived and the victims were gagged to prevent their speaking to the crowd. Like many martyrs in Flanders, Jacob does not seem to have accepted the doctrine of incarnation as taught by Menno Simons . A brother of Jacob, Hans van der Weghe, had also died at the stake at Gent on 7 November 1570.
