A History of the Borough and Town of Calne, page 69: And a good proof that the burgesses were jealous of whom they admitted to their number is furnished by the case of Humphrey Sampson : "Whereas Humphrey Sampson by sinister & fraudulent meanes have gotten hym selfe to be sworne a Burgesse of the Borrowe of Calne wee the Burgesses of Calne aforesaid whose names are hereunder written do not alowe of his electyon but utterlye denye him to be anye burgesse of the borrowe of Calne."
