On the 2nd of August, 1639, whilst Provost Corsane and Bailies Richardson and M'Burnie were holding a court in the Tolbooth, there " compeirit Richard Hemes, deykone of the Tailyours, Jon M'Burnie, Jon Clerk, Thomas M'Kynnell, William Martin, Hew Fergusone, and John Padzean," members of the said craft, " quha for themselves, and in name of the remanent brether " masters, reminded the autho- rities that, on the 31st of March, 1547, their predecessors had authorised the trade to make statutes for its protection ; that they had, on the 1st of March, 1586, confirmed these enactments ; and that notwithstanding of this, the lawful craftsmen had of late been " heavily hurt and dampnified be ane great number of unfreimen, wha lives licentiouslie,
