Henry Randall, who is styled lawman of Orkney in the translation in a record of the date Jan. 24. 1438, where the status, along with John Haraldson, balie of Kirkwall, and James of Lask, that they heard two men (named) swear on the "hirdmen steine", before the Earl and "the gentiles" of the country, that they were present in the vestry of the Cathedral of St. Magnus, when Thomas Sinclar asked John of Kirkwall, then lawman of Orkney, some questions. This would seem to imply that, in the year 1438, Henry Rendall may probably had been lawman a very short time, and that the lawman of 1438 may probably have been John of Kirkwall. The following curious evidence of this feeling occurs in a deed in the possession of Mr. W. H. Fotheringham, dated at Kirkwall in 1438 :-“ Till all and synd lele folk in Cryste, to quhais knawledge yir pnt. wris. sal cum, Henry Randall, lawman of Orknay, John Naraldson, balze off Kirkwaw, Jamis off Lask, Greeting in Gode ...   A copy of the so-called Genealogy, the genealogical record compiled in support of William Sinclair's Compaign for succession to earldom from 1443 was sealed by Henry Randall in accordance with the will of the community. The closing lines of that work articulate the lawman's role as the voice of the people, explaining that is was affirmed with the seals of the bishop Thomas Tulloch, and cannons, as well as the entire people and community of our country of Orkney, (with) what is called the communial seal and Henry Randall. lawman in our public and general session, (and) not with out great maturity and amplw deliberation.
